LANSING – The state Marijuana Regulatory Agency unveiled the emergency administrative rules that will be used to implement the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act (MRTMA, also known as Proposal 1 of 2018). These rules will guide how marijuana businesses that serve adults 21 years and older will operate.

In response to these rules, Michigan Cannabis Industry Association Communications Director Josh Hovey issued the following statement:

“We appreciate the hard work staff at the Marijuana Regulatory Agency put in to quickly develop these draft rules so that Michigan can get its adult use cannabis program online as soon as possible. At first glance we believe these rules are well thought out and forward-thinking.

“We particularly like that there are no capitalization requirements, which should help make licenses more accessible to small business owners.

“The newly created Excess Grower License will help address the product shortage issue that we’ve been experiencing in the medical marijuana market.

“There is a strong demand for on-site consumption and cannabis-friendly special events, so we also are thankful that there will be licensing available for businesses that cater to this need.

“And the fact that licensees will be required to submit social equity plans that detail how they plan on making their business inclusive to people disproportionately impacted by prohibition should help encourage a more diverse industry,” said Hovey.

The MICIA will be reviewing the draft rules in detail in the coming days and weeks with our members. The association looks forward to providing its in-depth analysis and feedback to the MRA as soon as possible.
